Dude, I have watched your dad in the kitchen and in many of your videos. That man I'd like to cook with and learn from. You are lucky to have a wonderful dad who gave you the gift of food and the pure joy that accompanies cooking for the family.
What a beautiful family and what lovely spirit...say hello to the Chef on my behalf.
Ahhh that's amazing Frank!! We're so honored to hear that you've watched so many of our videos. I couldn't agree more with how lucky I am. We really appreciate the love!
I watched that video shortly after it was released. Watching the joy and hard work your parents brought to that event left me in tears. I’m tearing up again and I haven’t started watching it again.
Hi Randy. From one Lau to another....What a great video!
Aah such nostalgic classic Cantonese dishes. Brings back many many great meal gatherings at my own family table back in Malaysia. Food and gathering at the dinner table is the way we show our love in a Chinese family. Cooking with our heart and soul brings joy to those who do the cooking as it is our way to care for our loved ones... that is what your father did for you and your family.
My grandmother, mother, and her sisters are accomplished cooks. I learned great many cooking techniques from them before I ever decided to become a chef myself. I have imbibed in many great Cantonese dishes such as the ones your dad cooked. They made me hungry and longed for happy memories I had with my family back home.
Watching your father impart his knowledge to the rest of the other chefs is priceless. His dedication to his craft is truly a wonderful sight to see. I witnessed that dedication in my own family cooks. At 80 years old, your dad is still going strong. His passion for cooking goes beyond just a job that he used to do. This is what he loves in life and it gives him great joy in sharing his love. It can be seen in his precision and execution of each dish, which has to be perfect with perfect timing. It all pays off in the end when your guests takes the first bite and they melt into ooohs and aaaahs. That is the testament to a great chefs hard work. The joy of pleasing their guests. My mum is 88 years old and she still cooks three square meals a day. She complaints at times on how fed up she is cooking, but bring up the subject of food and recipes, she lights up like a Christmas tree.
What a great honor for you and your family to get the chance to cook for YouTube and James Beard Foundation. Here's to more continued success, but more importantly, here is to more cherished cooking moments that you can document of your father's cooking and his life to share with your family. Time is short and precious. Enjoy the moment while you can.
Hi Mei, Laus unite! I can totally see my dad in your mother, still cooking up a storm at 88 years old! My dad has said very similar things about cooking bringing joy and being an expression of love. Well said Mei!
I come from a Taishanese, Cantonese background and my parents are first generation immigrants. There is often a belief that they should be sparing with words of praise and express their affection through deeds instead: thousands and thousands of meals, and taking us to school, and nursing us to health when we are sick, and working hard to invest in a better future. It means so much and is deeply felt. And yet it is still so moving to receive it in words on the rare occasion because the words convey exactly what are felt, and impart another layer of meaning to the acts of love we have received.
I am so happy for you to have had this moment with your parents and for all bonding you've had making the channel with them. Wishing you many more happy years. Thank you for sharing with all of us. 😀❤️
Thank you so much for saying that Tim. That is 100% my experience as well. My parents didn’t dole out too much praise either but they are selfless and love us unconditionally.
Beautiful sentiments. Almost more than the cooking, I watch your videos for the conversations around the dinner table, and especially when your mom and dad recount what it was like for them in China. So much history and tradition. Food is what binds us together! Aloha!
Acknowledging here that you are the glue and the hinge that makes this all happen for you and your family, Randy. 🥰 Also, great job on getting some Chinese mom praise! 🤣
Only when those words come from our parents, does it have that effect! Similar thing happened to me the other day when I showed my mum something I received as gratitude for my work. She typed - proud of you - in our family chat. And I stared at the screen not knowing how to respond.
I could have said a lot of things that were going through my mind, but I just took in that moment.
Still striving to have a better relationship with my parents overall, so watchng you and your family motivates me Randy!
That is so sweet. Ever since I stumbled upon Made With Lau, I feel like I know the family. Watching Daddy Lau chop/slice/dice meat and veggies and make these delicious meals, I have come to really appreciate how much skill it takes to make a great meal. I was a terrible cook but I, hesitantly at first, started to try to follow his recipes to make some of the dishes. I am still not a great cook, but the Made with Lau videos made it less intimidating, and I refer to the recipes to follow along with. Love seeing the family grow with grandbabies now and seeing how much the family members love and support each other. Keep up the great work, Lau family! Much success and longevity!

My pleasure, bro. Family love is beautiful to watch.
I don't write much about it but am inspired to write more next time around.
Check out my stuff when you get a chance. I can't guarantee it'll be up your alley...but hey, it's there to enjoy.

Thank you so much Darien! It’s an honor to get to learn and share their story.

Make a life-sized poster of that screenshot haha. I made this looping video of my mom saying something similar in the past as a half joke.
Definitely need to take in those moments more myself too!
Next year’s present for her!

Very nice family. So happy they are carrying on & sharing the traditional Chinese culinary tools.
